Background Check for Personal Use

This page is about a background check for personal reasons only. MugshotLookup is not a consumer reporting agency as defined by the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). You may not use this site or any information from it to make decisions about employment, tenant screening, consumer credit, insurance or any other purpose covered by the FCRA.

A personal background check gathers the public records about a person, such as arrests, court cases and address history, so you know more about someone before you meet or trust them. MugshotLookup builds it from a name and a state and shows the source and date of every record.

When a personal background check makes sense

Couple reviewing a printed background report at a kitchen table
  • Before a first date with someone you met online.
  • Before you meet a seller or a buyer you found online.
  • When a new person enters the life of a family member.
  • When you want to see what public records say about you.
  • When you are reconnecting with someone and want to confirm you have the right person.

What this background check cannot be used for

  • Deciding whether to hire, promote or keep an employee, a contractor, a household worker or a volunteer.
  • Deciding whether to rent a home to a person.
  • Deciding on credit, lending or insurance.
  • Deciding eligibility for a license, a benefit or a scholarship.

For any of these you need a consumer reporting agency that follows the FCRA, and the person must be told and must consent. Read the FCRA notice.

What a personal background check includes

Section What it shows
Arrest and booking records Agency, booking date, county and charges at booking
Charges and dispositions How each case ended, when the source reports it
Court records Case numbers, courts and case status
Known addresses Current and past addresses in public records
Phone numbers and aliases Numbers and other names tied to the person
Relatives and associates People linked to the same addresses or records

An arrest is not a conviction. Charges may have been dropped, dismissed or resulted in acquittal.

How to run a background check by name

Two people can share a name, and public records can be out of date. Compare the age, the county and the dates before you decide a record belongs to the person you mean, and check the listed source. Do not confront anyone over a record. If a record worries you, the safest step is to keep your distance.

Questions and answers

Can I run a background check on myself?

Yes. Searching your own name shows what public sources say about you. If a record is wrong, ask for a correction for free on the opt-out page.

Does the person find out?

No. Searches are private and the person is not notified.

Can I use this to check a tenant or an employee?

No. That use is prohibited. MugshotLookup is not a consumer reporting agency.
