Warrant Search by Name and State
A warrant search checks whether a court has issued a warrant for a person. Warrants are issued by local courts and held by local law enforcement, so the place to look is the county. There is no public national warrant database. MugshotLookup searches by name and state and lists the official sources that cover the jurisdiction.
Searches are private. The person you search is not notified.
The types of warrants a search can find
| Warrant | Issued when |
|---|---|
| Arrest warrant | A judge finds probable cause that a person committed a crime |
| Bench warrant | A person misses a court date or disobeys a court order |
| Probation or parole warrant | A person is accused of breaking the terms of supervision |
A warrant is an order to bring a person before the court. It is not a finding of guilt.
Where active warrants are published
- County sheriff's offices. Many publish an active warrant list or a warrant search on their website.
- Clerks of court. A case record usually shows when a warrant was issued and whether it was recalled.
- State agencies. A few states run a statewide warrant or wanted persons search.
- Federal warrants are not searchable by the public. The U.S. Marshals Service publishes only its most wanted fugitives.
Not every warrant is public. A court can seal a warrant until it is served. The Source Directory links to the official sources for each state.
How a warrant search by name works
Enter the name and the state, and add the city if you know it. MugshotLookup lists the sheriff and court sources for the jurisdiction. The full report shows the court and arrest records it finds for the person, including cases with a warrant noted in the record.
If you think there is a warrant for you
Call the clerk of the court that would have issued it, or speak to a criminal defense attorney, who can confirm the warrant and arrange for you to appear. Courts often recall a bench warrant when the person comes in voluntarily. Do not rely on any website, including this one, as the final word on whether a warrant is active.
What not to do with a warrant search
Do not try to detain or confront a person because of a warrant. Report information to the law enforcement agency that holds the warrant.

Questions and answers
How do I find out if someone has a warrant?
Check the warrant list of the county sheriff and the case search of the clerk of court in the county where the case would be. The guide how to find out if someone has a warrant walks through each step.
Is there a national warrant search?
No. The national file used by police is closed to the public. Warrants are searched county by county and, in a few states, through a statewide tool.
Do warrants expire?
Arrest and bench warrants generally stay active until the person is arrested or a judge recalls the warrant.
