North Carolina Mugshots and Arrest Records

Arrest information is public under state law, but the statute does not name booking photos, so release is decided by each agency. This page lists the official North Carolina sources and what is and is not settled about booking photos.

How arrest and booking records are kept in North Carolina

State archives building with stone columns on a sunny day

Under the North Carolina public records law, core arrest information is public: the name, age and address of the person arrested, the charges, and the time and place of the arrest. The law, in G.S. 132-1.4, does not mention booking photos, and agencies decide for themselves whether to publish them. Many sheriffs do. Criminal cases are kept by the clerk of superior court in each county and are searchable statewide. People sentenced to prison are recorded by the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction.

An arrest is not a conviction. Charges may have been dropped, dismissed or resulted in acquittal.
