Find Out if a Family Member Was Arrested and Where They Are Held
When a relative does not come home and you suspect an arrest, the questions are simple: were they arrested, which jail are they in, and what are the charges. A search by name and state points you to the jail roster and the court sources for the county, and the full report shows the booking record with its date and source.
Searches are private. The person you search is not notified.
What to do first
Work out the county where the arrest most likely happened. It is usually where the person was at the time, not where they live.
Search their name and state here, with the city, to get the official sources for that county.
Open the jail roster of the county and look for their name. Booking can take a few hours.
Write down the booking number, the charges and the bond amount.
What the booking record tells you
| Field | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Facility | Where to call and where to visit |
| Booking number | The reference the jail asks for on every call |
| Charges | What a lawyer needs to know first |
| Bond | Whether and how the person can be released before trial |
| Next court date | When the first appearance takes place, if the roster shows it |
An arrest is not a conviction. Charges may have been dropped, dismissed or resulted in acquittal.
If the name is not on the roster
- Booking may not be finished. Check again in a few hours.
- The arrest may have happened in a neighboring county or a city jail.
- The person may have been released, or taken to a hospital.
- If the person is under 18, the record is confidential. Call the juvenile intake office of the county.
- If you fear immigration detention, use the Online Detainee Locator System of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
A statewide search by name covers every official source we list for the state. See inmate search and who's in jail.
After you find them
Call the jail with the booking number for visiting and phone rules. Do not discuss the facts of the case on a jail phone, because calls are recorded. Contact a criminal defense attorney or the public defender's office of the county. To follow what happens next, turn on arrest alerts and check the court case lookup for the case once charges are filed.
Questions and answers
How long after an arrest does someone show up in the system?
Usually within a few hours, once booking is complete. Busy jails can take longer.
Can I find out the charges?
Yes. The jail roster or arrest inquiry lists the charges at booking. The court record shows the charges a prosecutor files later, which can differ.
