How arrest and booking records are kept in Tennessee

Rows of archived court record boxes in a basement archive

An arrest in Tennessee is booked into the jail of the county where it happens, which is run by the county sheriff. Booking records are generally open to inspection under the Tennessee Public Records Act in T.C.A. 10-7-503. Criminal cases are kept by the circuit, criminal and general sessions court clerks of the county. People convicted of felonies are recorded by the Tennessee Department of Correction.

An arrest is not a conviction. Charges may have been dropped, dismissed or resulted in acquittal.
